"The best thing about Australian Storytime is being able to share the story."
Frank Jones, Television host and author.
Australian Storytime is held each year in conjunction with Australian Literacy and Numeracy Week. The program aims to promote the value of reading, literacy, books and also to support Australian Writers and publishers.
Australian Storytime is organised by the Australian Library and Information Association and supported by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training. This strong partnership has enabled public libraries and schools to work together towards shared goals of improving literacy skills and encouraging a love of books and reading in young Australians.
These partnerships recognise the vitality of literacy skills and its importance for people to function in their daily lives.
The Association works with children’s and youth librarians around Australia to select books and develop activities, including games, songs and merchandise for Australian Storytime.
The organisation helps to promote "The Love of Reading". They aim to bring together families and the bonds between children and parents.
"I have never met a child who didn’t love being read to and sharing books is one of the greatest pleasures of childhood" Gemma Smith, Illustrator.
